Ecothor®

Electro-Coagulation and Electro-Disinfection

Ecothor® – Electrotechnology Platform

Ecothor® is a proprietary electrotechnology platform, covered by 18 patents, including 10 issued. Ecothor® uses the power of electricity and the ingenuity of the team at E2METRIX to provide a clean and economical treatment of water, wastewater, landfill leachate, groundwater municipal and industrial water (ex. mining, food & beverage, agriculture). To date, E2METRIX have delivered over 200 reactors.

Ecothor® is a modular, “plug & play” process. The Ecothor® reactor can be operated alone or assembled together to treat water flows from as low as 1 cubic metre to thousands of cubic metres daily. Ecothor can operate in two different modes electro-coagulation (Ecothor®-EC) and electro-disinfection (Ecothor®-D) to target removal of a wide range of contaminates.

Ecothor® is the next-generation technology for the removal & recovery of nutrients, the reduction of micro-contaminants, the elimination of microorganisms and the advanced oxidation of complex organics.

Ecothor® is a comprehensive and cost-effective solution for advanced wastewater treatment.

Low OPEX – proprietary anode design with an optimized power management system ensures low operating costs.

Low CAPEX – flexible reactor sizing ensures that the system can easily scale up from less than 10 m3/d to more than 5,000 m3/d.

Electrochemical Disinfection

Ecothor®-D is a simple to operate, chemical-free, cost-effective solution to eliminate pathogens and other microorganisms in at-risk water circuits such as those for cooling towers, hotel & hospital hot water systems, or for safe re-use of process water. The E2METRIX technology is protected by a vast portfolio of patents.

Electro disinfection involves passing an electrical current through the water that is passing through the reactor. The current ionizes the organic compounds on the surface of the bacterial and biofilm cell walls (including legionella), which induces the inactivation of the organism and its elimination. The removal of these pathogens is achieved with the potential difference between the electrodes, as well as the formation of clean, powerful oxidants.

Ecothor®-D uses non-sacrificial anodes designed to generate powerful oxidants. The type of anode used is based on the requirements of the application. Different anodes are used depending on the properties of the water. The type and quantity of the oxidant generated can be adjusted via the system controls and algorithms. The oxidants can include hydroxyl radicals of various forms, ozone, hydrogen peroxide and others. Because the electrodes are non-sacrificial, they have a long working life.

Electro-coagulation

Ecothor®-EC is a patented, cost-effective and green treatment process that utilizes electro-coagulation to treat and eliminate complex organics, total suspended solids, heavy metals, emulsified oils, phosphates, ammonia, other contaminants from water. The process is completely automated and includes real-time water quality monitoring, data logging, and controls that guarantees compliance with discharge criteria.

Electro-coagulation is a water treatment process whereby an electric current is applied across metal anodes to remove various contaminants from water. The metal cations dissolved in the wastewater are complexed to form hydroxide ions, and these compounds act as a coagulant. By controlling the amperage, the coagulant dosage can be adjusted to meet the treatment goals. Although the electro-coagulation mechanism resembles chemical coagulation, some differences benefit electro-coagulation. Indeed, electro-coagulated flocs differ from those generated by chemical coagulation. Flocs created with the electro-coagulation process tend to contain less bound water, are generally more resistant to shearing and are typically more easily filterable.

E2METRIX’s electro-coagulation technology does not use hazardous chemicals. Anodes are selected depending on the treatment application. E2METRIX’s technology is protected by an extensive patent portfolio.
